JVC GC-PX10

This camera from JVC is a peculiar beast. Not quite still camera, not quite camcorder, it hops between both categories but keeps a foot firmly ensconced in each. It actually looks a little bit like a Sony NEX interchangeable lens camera with a huge lens mounted on the front, although, to be fair, the PX10 has an attached 12x optical zoom lens that can't be removed. The specs sheet rattles off the standard still camera requirements, with a 12-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor, 3-inch tilting touchscreen and a Konica Minolta lens.

Things look a little different when reviewing its video capabilities. Able to capture full HD video in 1080p (MP4) at 36Mbps, the PX10 can also capture 50 frames per second in continuous mode — though there is no information on whether this is at full 12-megapixel resolution. Slow-motion video at 250 frames per second is captured at VGA resolution. More importantly, the PX10 has 32GB of internal memory that can be augmented by SD cards.

Given that the still camera market is fairly mature, and pretty much every camera worth its salt has some degree of HD video recording, we're wondering whether the PX10 has the chops to make a dent in the minds of photographers and videographers. JVC calls this camera a hybrid, which isn't the first time that a camera manufacturer has made such a claim (we're looking at you, Panasonic). Certainly, the video quality will have to stack up against standalone camcorders for it to make its mark. The PX10 will be available from October in Australia for AU$1099.
