High end compacts seem to be the cameras of the moment. An impressive selection of them have been released recently, and Sony are adding another new one to the pack. The Sony NEX-7 is the newest offering from the previously low spec NEX series of compacts.
What specification does the Sony NEX-7 have on offer for all of the budding photographers out there? Well, let’s start with the resolution; this compact delivers with 24.3 megapixels of resolution; this level of quality from a compact is superb.
You also get an OLED electronic viewfinder, an APS-C sized sensor and a generous helping of dials and controls, most of which you will probably never use, let alone figure out what they do. Some of these dials are customisable too. The camera’s trusty d-pad can even be programmed to act like the hot-spots you have on your phone, allowing you to programme your most used features for use at the click of a button.
The camera itself is easy to use, and the 3-inch tilt-able LCD screen works well in good light conditions. The trouble is, even with all its fancy features the NEX-7 never feels very special. The camera costs £1129, which we can all agree is anything but compact.
The camera is nice enough, and does a decent job, but for the price you’d at least expect a decent lens. If you’re splashing the cash you’d be better off splashing it on the superior Sony A77 instead.
